Hi I am Leslie Miller.
I divide my heart and time between Tubac, AZ, and my hometown Knoxville, TN.
Stating my intentions as an artist is difficult for me, as I have only been painting for since 2014. I know I would like to communicate my view of the miracles of the life that surrounds us through my artwork. With the help of my mentor, Lou Maestas, I am finding my style. I paint daily, listening to my inner voice. As a child, my parents instilled in me an affinity for and an intense curiosity in God’s creation. I can see that life is beautiful. If you look closely, all of God’s creatures have a story. I imagine what that story might be and offer that narrative through my work.
How I Began this Journey:
Early this year I began pursuing a lifelong dream, to become a fine art artist. I specify fine arts because I have always been creative and have explored a huge variety of ways to express my need to share beauty. I however never learned to paint or draw the way I have dreamed of. In March I began taking art workshops in Tubac, Arizona.
Never one to ease into anything, I first signed up for a 3-day plein air workshop with Walter Porter. I bought the supplies the week before and tried them out once before the workshop. I was totally unprepared and inexperienced for the quality of work he was demonstrating and the other participants were painting. Walter is a kind and patient man, he never once made me feel bad for signing up for a class so far beyond my experience, instead, he was very encouraging. His passion for oil painting is contagious. I left with some pretty bad paintings but pages of notes and resources along with a great desire to learn more.
Two weeks later I sat in on another class led by Lou Maestas. I didn’t know anything about him or the class, but I took a chance. This was exactly what I needed. Lou is the most amazing teacher and talented artist. I had the privilege of taking many “Monday” morning classes as well as a long weekend of intense one on one training with him at the Beads of Tubac. Thus began my journey to a becoming a fine artist. I have a long way to go and I am so excited about the trip!
