Sensory storylines

Each day of September I’ll be adding a sensory story, inspired by a few sensory storyline prompts, I wrote to take me back to the time and space where the reference photos were taken. These stories may not jive (coincide) with the day’s painting. Hopefully, these sensory stories will give you a better sense of the place,of our experience, and of walking across Wales.

Mid way through the trip there is a reprieve, the entire day’s walk follows the towpath along a canal. That means flat.FLAT!
You can read about the area, here. Montgomeryshire Canal
Along the way  I stopped in my tracks at the most unusual noise, it was a family of swans eating. Watch this video! Got so tickled and kept telling John to stop and come here them, he was yelling for me to come see the one, further along, hence the video only showing one. But you can imagine the symphony of 6 swans slurping and chomping.

The canals and rivers of England and Wales might have been built by humans, to serve the needs of trade and industry, but over the years they have become a haven for a diverse range of flora and fauna.

We recently went on the most amazing journey. Wainwrights Coast to Coast walk from the Irish Sea to the North Sea through the Lakes District, the Yorkshire Dales and the Yorkshire Moors. 192 miles of artist’s fodder. Problem being I was hiking not stopping to draw and paint, so i have reference photos albeit iPhone photos in order to paint from.

I set out to chose 1 photo of the 1000+ images to represent each day of the journey as a series. it was hard to chose some days were more picturesque than others. some dryer and others down right soaking wet and grey. Instead I have 9 scenes I have chosen. I then began value and scaled up drawings of the trip.

I painted one. A curious cow we were greeted by as we approached***. The valley below was like a beautiful patchwork pieced by talented hands.

Like most grandiose ideas I quickly abandoned that series notion for a new idea, I’d share but I’ve already moved on to another one or two ideas. There are some great sketches waiting on the sideline I still would like to paint. If only there were more hours in each day!
